Newcastle United are eyeing a move for PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko in January but face tough competition
Paul Mitchell and co are hoping to make improvements to the Newcastle first-team squad in the upcoming transfer window with several names linked with a move to Tyneside.
Eddie Howe spent the summer chasing Marc Guehi who ultimately remained at Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace.
Elsewhere, Newcastle have recently been linked to Antonio Silva who has a release clause of €50million (£41.2m / $52.5m).
A position Newcastle has looked particularly weak in is right-wing, especially after the Magpies sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton to help tackle ongoing PSR issues.
PSV winger Johan Bakayoko has been linked with a move to Tyneside in January as they look to fill the void left by Minteh’s departure.
However, Newcastle’s plans could be hindered after recent reports.

Bakayoko has made 14 appearances in the Eredivisie this season scoring five and bagging one assist. He has also featured in all of PSV’s UEFA Champions League games scoring in a 4-0 win against Girona.

The 21-year-old has garnered interest from Newcastle with Bakayoko considered their top target for the summer but now according to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are ready to hijack the deal.
A move from the league leaders could sway Bakayoko who is keen to play European football, something Newcastle can’t offer immediately.
Liverpool failed to win in their visit to St James’ Park in December with Fabian Schar scoring a thrilling late equaliser to draw the game 3-3.
A January move for Bakayoko isn’t out of the picture yet despite his claims that he is already at a big club.

The report also suggests that PSV want at least €60m (£49.8m / $63m) for Bakayoko to consider letting him leave.
Newcastle will need to sell before they can buy as a result of PSR, with the Magpies narrowly avoiding a points deduction in the summer by selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Minteh to Brighton.
Several Newcastle United players have been linked with January exits, Jamaal Lascelles has attracted interest from Wolves but remains some way off full fitness.
The future of Sean Longstaff recently came into the spotlight with suggestions that he could be sold in January, he is a player who would generate pure profit for the Magpies thanks to his academy links.
Newcastle’s PSR problems put Liverpool in the driver’s seat to land Bakayoko, especially with Arne Slot’s links to Dutch football.
