Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has dismissed suggestions that he had little to contribute during Saturday’s goalless draw against Everton in the Premier League. Despite not having to make a single save, Raya argued that his role was instrumental in Arsenal’s dominance throughout the match.
Raya, who helped the Gunners control 77% of possession and nullify Everton’s set-piece opportunities, bristled at suggestions that his afternoon was uneventful. The Spaniard seized the opportunity to clarify that his contributions extended beyond traditional goalkeeping duties.
“You say I had nothing to do, but I thought I played really well in that aspect,” Raya remarked. “Maybe not in making saves, but in helping the team—stopping the ball from going behind, managing possession regains, and all that stuff. That’s just part of the game and how we play.”

The 28-year-old emphasised his proactive approach, noting, “The team needed me when the ball went in behind. I just try to come out, keep the ball, and avoid rash decisions. For me, it was a complete game.”

On Arsenal’s inability to find the net despite their dominance, Raya downplayed concerns over confidence, stating, “It’s just football. Sometimes you score from set pieces, sometimes from open play. We’re dangerous in both areas, but when teams sit back, it becomes harder to create those chances.”

He acknowledged Everton’s resolute defence, adding, “They defended very well, and they’re a good team in those situations. We had chances, but we need to focus on ourselves and keep going.”
The draw leaves Arsenal reflecting on missed opportunities but reassured by their ability to control matches, with Raya’s performance offering a reminder that goalkeepers can make an impact even without dramatic saves.
