Alan Shearer now delivers 'horrible' verdict as Newcastle United hammer Leicester City

Alan Shearer has been very critical of Newcastle United as of late.

The Newcastle United legend has not held back in recent weeks after watching Eddie Howe’s side fail to find consistency.

On the back of that blistering draw with Liverpool, Newcastle lost 4-2 to Brentford.

Bruno Guimaraes said Newcastle were a mess, as they capitulated in the second half at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Shearer criticised Newcastle’s attitude, questioning why the players only seem to get up for games at home against the ‘big six’.

It was a fair criticism, and Newcastle United responded on Saturday.

Alan Shearer delivers fresh verdict on Newcastle United

On paper, Newcastle were expected to beat Leicester City. They did just that, breezing past the Foxes to win 4-0.

It was an emphatic victory for Newcastle, and Alan Shearer has told The Rest Is Football podcast that he was very happy with what he saw from Eddie Howe’s side.

“I said the previous week about the lack of energy, the lack of pressing – all of those things were back,” he said.

“They were back to being a horrible team to play against. They played really, really well. It was a really good all round performance.

“They need to keep it up. They’ve got two important games [this week].”

Big week ahead for ‘horrible’ Newcastle United

Shearer liked what he saw from Newcastle United, as did the fans inside St James’ Park on Saturday.

Newcastle fans serenaded Eddie Howe in stoppage time, as his side bounced back after receiving a lot of criticism.

The win will hopefully allow the Magpies to build up some momentum, as they have two more huge fixtures this week.

First up is Brentford in the Carabao Cup quarter-final at St James’ Park. It is a chance to reach the semi-final of a major competition, as Newcastle aim to end their trophy drought.

After that, Newcastle United face Ipswich Town at Portman Road. It will be a tough away day for Eddie Howe’s side, but it is another game that his team should be good enough to win if they are serious about qualifying for Europe.

Two more wins are vital for Newcastle United, who can hopefully continue to prove they are back to their horrible best.
