Eddie Howe and Newcastle United could have to let players leave in January
A lot has been made about possible January incoming at Newcastle United, with numerous financial rules hindering their transfer business in recent years.
In the summer, Eddie Howe and co sold a couple of players in order to bring in some players of their own. It is likely that the Magpies could have to do something similar at the star of 2025.
How many players could leave Newcastle next month? ChronicleLive take a look at seven players who could potentially leave St James' Park in January...
Miguel Almiron
The future of Almiron has been a big talking point at Newcastle this season. As January approaches, now could be the time for the Paraguayan to leave St James' Park.
So far this season, Almiron has played just eight times with just three starts - only one of those have come in the Premier League. Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy have largely been given the minutes.
His agent revealed that the 30-year-old's contract runs until the summer of 2027. Several MLS teams are said to be interested in the player, which would see him return to America.
Jacob Murphy
Newcastle have been looking to add to their attacking options for a while now. However, profit and sustainability rules (PSR) as well as financial fair play (FFP) have restricted the Magpies' ability to bring players in.
He has featured prominently this campaign, playing 13 Premier League games. The winger has recorded four assists in those appearances and at the weekend scored a double against Leicester City.
An attacker is towards the top of Newcastle's list, but could face issues in trying to bring one in. A possible Murphy departure could help in securing a deal for one of those targets.
Jamaal Lascelles
Lascelles is in his tenth season at Newcastle after joining from Nottingham Forest in 2014. The defender has struggled for game time in recent seasons.
The 31-year-old has not played at all this campaign due to injury. He injured his ACL in the 4-3 home win against West Ham United back in March.
With his contract up at the end of this term, now would be the best time to cash in and get some money for the centre-back. If not, he is free to walk in the summer.
Kieran Trippier
Trippier has seen a reduction in first-team minutes this campaign for Newcastle. Whether it be due to injury or Tino Livramento's impressive performances, the full-back has been limited to nine appearances in 2024/25.
The 34-year-old's contract runs for another in the summer of 2026. However, a possible January exit could allow Howe to strengthen in areas.
Newcastle are more likely to cash in on Trippier rather than letting his contract run through until the end. Whether or not the right-back stays in England, goes back to Europe or even goes to Saudi Arabia is yet to be seen but an exit feels more likely for a player who helped transform the club as the first big arrival of the new era.
Martin Dubravka
Goalkeepers are a position that Newcastle have a decent amount of depth in. Nick Pope, Odysseas Vlachodimos, John Ruddy and Mark Gillespe battle it out alongside Dubravka in the position.
The 35-year-old has only played once this season, playing 45 minutes in the EFL Cup against AFC Wimbledon. He has also appeared three times for Slovakia in their Nations League campaign.
Dubravka's contract runs out at the end of the campaign and he can leave on a free if a bid is not accepted in January. The Slovakian can also leave next month on a pre-contract agreement.
Matt Targett
It is pretty clear that Targett doesn't feature much in Howe's plans at St James' Park. The 29-year-old has yet to feature for the first-team in 2024.
Recently, the left-back has been named on the bench for fixtures against Nottingham Forest, West Ham United, Liverpool and Brentford. He has played twice U21 side against Sunderland and Crystal Palace.
With Targett's contract ending in the summer of 2026, a deal will need to be agreed to end his time at Newcastle. It would also open up a spot in the registered squad.
Harvey Barnes
Now this is could be construed as a controversial entry. Barnes has been an important part of Newcastle's side this season, scoring five times in 15 games.
However, should Howe want to go after certain targets, the winger could be sold in order to fund those particular bids. With the club having a long shortlist, there could be a few players on there that could require extra funds.
Barnes has not quite nailed down a starting place in the team, either being subbed off in the second half or coming off the bench. The 27-year-old is likely to have Premier League interest.
