Tottenham were at their ruthless best in the 5-0 drubbing of Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium
Tottenham Hotspur bounced back to winning ways with some swagger and style on Sunday, putting five goals past Southampton with no reply at the St Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League.
This was the kind of performance Spurs fans have been craving for weeks; in fact, since the 4-0 drubbing of Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last month. Since beating Man City in the Premier League, Ange Postecoglou’s side had drawn three and lost two games across all competitions until the trip to Southampton.
The North Londoners ensured to seal the deal in the first half itself, thanks to a sublime brace for James Maddison and strikes from Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Matar Sarr. The hapless Saints managed to control the damage after the break by conceding no more goals.

In the grand scheme of things, Ange Postecoglou was delighted by the manner in which his players dominated Southampton and finished the game in the first half itself. When asked how important a win for Tottenham was on Sunday, he told TNT Sports (h/t BBC Sport):
“It helps. You just want the players to feel good and get a reward for their efforts. We can’t rest or rotate and you want them to feel good. They get their reward tonight and we’ll recover and get ready for a big game on Thursday.”
Spurs have not been in a great moment in recent weeks, royally struggling with confidence, form and injury problems. Persistent injury issues have severely hampered the team’s progress in Big Ange’s second season in charge in North London.

The Lilywhites had 10 first-team players unavailable on the trip to Southampton, so the boss had to be bold with his team selection and freshen up his squad that drew 1-1 with Rangers in midweek in the Europa League. The decision to hand Djed Spence his first Premier League start paid rich dividends as he made his mark, while senior members such as Maddison, Son and Kulusevski stepped up and delivered the goods under the lights.
Yes, it was a win against a rock-bottom, morale-sapped Southampton side, but this would do wonders for the confidence of Spurs players, who are set for bigger tests in the forthcoming fixtures against Manchester United and Liverpool.

Let’s hope we can build on this performance in the midweek Carabao Cup quarter-finals against Rube Amorim’s Man United side.
