Ipswich Town stars spread Christmas cheer with hospice visits

Town chief executive and chairman Mark Ashton and manager Kieran McKenna, alongside members of the first team squad, visited East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) Treehouse in Ipswich, St Elizabeth Hospice and the children's ward at Ipswich Hospital last week.

They were distributing gifts which were donated by players, signing shirts and other pieces of memorabilia and taking pictures with those receiving care over the festive period.

As part of the visits, those in attendance were provided information about the purpose of each care unit, with staff at EACH also providing a tour of the hospice.

Ashton said: "It's always important to get out into the community, especially at Christmas time.

"To learn about the work they do and to meet so many people was a real privilege and we hope the visits have brought some Christmas cheer to those who need it at this time of the year."

Following a visit to Ipswich Hospital, McKenna added: "The Christmas visits are always one of our yearly highlights and it's a great opportunity for us to meet those who are unfortunately receiving care in hospital over the festive period.

"We are in a privileged position to represent the club within the community and we know how much these visits mean to everyone.

"It's a nice boost for us to be able to deliver some presents and hopefully spread some cheer."

Rebecca, whose 14-year-old son Callum Winter has cerebral palsy, is being cared for at EACH's Treehouse. She said: "It’s lovely of the players to give their time, and they were great – genuinely interested and asking lots of questions about Callum.

"They wanted to know more about his condition and how it affects us, as a family."

Town defender Cameron Burgess said: "It’s important to be visible in our community and lovely to be in a position to put smiles on faces, hopefully making a positive impact on people’s lives.

"For the families to welcome us into their happy place felt great, and it was lovely spending time with them. These children deserve the world, and it was great to see them having fun."
