Ipswich Town column: Delight for Taylor after Wolves winner and club’s POTY for 2024 is…

2024 has been a special year to support Ipswich Town.

Yes, the last few months have been difficult adjusting back to life in the Premier League, but this was the year that saw us return and although victories haven’t flowed just as much as they did in the early parts of 2024, we had a special one to celebrate on Saturday.

After the Bournemouth heartbreak, I was pleased with how we responded against Wolves.

For 65 minutes, that was a top away performance before once again, our goalkeeper let us down.

We found a way though and I think on the whole we’ve deserved that in recent weeks. We kept going. This group always does.

What a moment and I was really pleased for the goal scorer. Jack Taylor probably signed in summer 2023 with the view that he’d be a regular in the side.

Like a salmon.

That hasn’t quite happened and he’s been in-and-out for a lot of his Town career so far.

Recently though, I’ve been really impressed with him. He’s taken his chances when called upon.

There’s a few stories like Jack in this group, as he joins Sam Morsy, Sammie Szmodics and Conor Chaplin as someone to have scored in all four top levels of the English game.

It sums up everything this group is about. Speaking of the group, and as we approach the end of this calendar year, it got me thinking, who has been our ‘player of 2024?’

There’s a few cases. Sam Morsy is obviously up there. Leif Davis too, but for me there can only be one, and that is Cameron Burgess.

Big Cam has been phenomenal under Kieran McKenna and has adapted extraordinarily well to life in the Premier League.

Remember it was he who scored that famous winning goal away at Coventry in late April to put us within touching distance of promotion and was one of the main reasons we were there in the first place.

I love him and I love his story. He’s been excellent.

Newcastle next. Sir Bobby will be looking down. He’d want a draw I think. I’d take that too.
