I saw Newcastle United diehards show their class after star's angry reaction in Leicester win

As Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy sprinted towards the Gallowgate End, to celebrate opening the scoring against Leicester City, there was a look of fury on his face - rather than excitement.

The winger pointed to his ear and screamed “WHAT, WHAT!” towards the home fans, clearly having heard some audible groans after two guilt-edged chances went begging for the 29-year-old in the early stages of the match. [Murphy](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/all-about/jacob-murphy) had sent two opportunities wide of the target before scoring at the third attempt after 30 minutes.

The wide man also sent a golden opportunity high into the Leazes End in the second period before scoring his second of the game just moments later. Murphy was eventually withdrawn with [Newcastle](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/all-about/newcastle-united-fc) home and hosed, with the right-sided attacker having to walk all the way around the edge of the pitch, along with Tino Livramento, to make it back to the bench.

Any early frustration at Murphy's finishing had subsided as he left the field, with the diehard home supporters applauding the duo at length as they made the trip around the stands. Murphy clapped back in their direction too, with all that anger from the first half clearly long gone after what was a positive performance from the forward.

After the game there was a more relaxed response from the player as he conducted his post match media duties. "We have to be calm," Murphy told Newcastle's media channels.

"Stay level-headed, never get too high and never get too low because we know results will come. One win changes a lot but staying level, staying calm and picking up points where you need to makes the table look a lot different."

Newcastle fans may feel frustrated at Murphy due to a lack of consistency so far this term. The right of Howe’s attack is one of few positions up for grabs at present but after a stellar pre season the boyhood Toon fan has been unable to replicate that type of form on a permanent basis.

Recent performances have been an improvement, however, with two goals on Saturday preceded by two assists at Brentford one week earlier. Maintaining that level of goal involvements will make Eddie Howe's job easier when it comes to picking his XI going forward.

Murphy must now show he can channel that initial anger into delivering for Newcastle on a regular basis. Home fans showed they remain behind him as he bids to repay the faith.
