Rafa Benitez is reportedly among the contenders to take charge at Premier League strugglers Southampton.

The Spaniard has been out of work since being sacked by Celta Vigo in March. Before that, Benitez had a brief stint at Everton - a move that proved controversial given his Liverpool connections.

He has previously made no secret of his desire to return to England and, following the Saudi-backed takeover, was linked with a Newcastle United return. Benitez spent three-and-a-half years on Tyneside during the latter stages of Mike Ashley’s ownership.

However, recent managerial failures and Eddie Howe’s successes at Newcastle make any St James’ Park return unlikely. Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers opened up two English vacancies after suffering humiliating defeats at the weekend.

Both clubs are rooted in the relegation zone with just three top-flight victories between them this season. The Saints cut ties with Russell Martin following a 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

“Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges that we would face this year as we readjusted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world,” a club statement read. “However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board have supported Russell and his staff and been open and transparent regarding our expectations.

“We have all been on the same page in recognising the urgency of needing results to improve. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months.

“Everyone connected with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season, especially the Play-Off Final win in May.”

Reports now name Benitez as an outside bet to succeed Martin at St Mary’s. The front-runners include Danny Rohl, Carlos Corberan, Jesse Marsch, David Moyes and Graham Potter.
