Ange Postecoglou's Lucas Bergvall plan may change for Spurs vs Man Utd cup tie

Lucas Bergvall took his opportunity with both hands as he delivered a very promising showing on his first Tottenham start in the Premier League. Having to make do with minutes off the bench in the league since his move from Djurgarden, the Swede has had the opportunity to feature regularly for Tottenham in their Europa League campaign.

After making his case in their European tie against Rangers last Thursday, the teenager was brought into the Tottenham XI for Sunday's 5-0 Premier League win away at Southampton. Lining up at the base of Tottenham's midfield and utilising the ball well when in possession, Bergvall was one of a number of players to excel in the big win on the south coast.

Certainly benefiting from Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur's suspensions, the Stockholm-born ace will be hoping he has done enough to get the nod from the off against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup on Thursday evening. Bergvall has certainly put himself in contention for a second successive start but Bissouma's return to the fold could possibly complicate things for Postecoglou when it comes to naming his starting XI.

Due to the importance of the game with a semi-final spot at stake, the head coach may opt for the experience of Bissouma in the No.6 role for Tottenham. Given Postecoglou's lack of options in certain positions of late, a selection headache in the middle of the park is certainly a welcome one.

On the latest episode of the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, Spurs writer Rob Guest is joined by football.london's Head of Football Lee Wilmot to reflect on Bergvall's performance at St Mary's. As well as analysing the Swede's display and discussing whether he is selected once again in midweek, Djed Spence also comes in for plenty of praise after talking his opportunity with a starring role in the team against Southampton.

The Tottenham Hotspur Fans' Footballer of the Year 2024 award is also a talking point with only one week of voting left to decide this year's winner. Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski, Brennan Johnson and Micky van de Ven are the four players battling it out for the prize.
