‘Eddie Howe facing Newcastle United sack’ - Richard Keys weighs in on manager debate

Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys believes Eddie Howe might not be at Newcastle United next season.

As it stands, the Magpies sit 12th in the Premier League despite battering Leicester City 4-0 on the weekend. But the tight nature of the division in 2024-25 means Newcastle are just five points off fourth.

Three points eased the pressure on Howe who, for the first time in his Toon career, has faced questions regarding his future. The ambitious Saudi-backed regime - and where they want Newcastle to go - keep expectation levels high at St James’ Park.

Debates regarding English coaches have ramped up in the past 24 hours following Gary Oneil and Russell Martin’s sacking. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton pulled the trigger with both clubs rooted to the bottom three.

Just three Premier League wins between them this season left club officials with no choice but to wield the axe - dealing a double blow to domestic coaching. A brutal reality is that Howe and Everton boss Sean Dyche are now the only two English managers in the top flight.

With both feeling the heat this season, there is a fear that the Premier League may not have a homegrown coach in the near future. Writing for his personal blog, TV anchor Keys questioned how long Howe will stay on Tyneside.

“I hope both O’Neil and Martin find their way back into the game,” he posted. “With Steve Cooper sacked earlier in the season were three British coaches down now.

“We’ve only got Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche and Kieran McKenna left. I don’t expect Dyche to start next season at Everton. The chances are Howe won’t be at Newcastle either and you’d be brave to suggest Ipswich will stay up.”
