Gary O’Neil has already delivered a ‘quality’ leaving gift to Vitor Pereira at Wolves - opinion

Wolves finally parted ways with Gary O’Neil on Sunday following an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town.

O’Neil’s sacking felt a long time coming as Wolves were on the slippery slope towards relegation, having collected just two league wins since April.

Wolves have already lined up Al Shabab manager Vitor Pereira as the Englishman’s replacement, and he’s set to join the club ahead of their trip to Leicester City.

The Portuguese boss is an exciting appointment, and supporters will hope he can lead them to Premier League safety.

Pereira will have a plethora of attacking talent to work with at Molineux, including Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha and Norwegian striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Gary O’Neil’s parting gift to Wolves is Jorgen Strand Larsen

O’Neil executed a lot of his decisions at Wolves badly but one he got correct was the loan signing of Strand Larsen from Celta Vigo.

In a season of struggle for the Old Gold, Strand Larsen has been a shining light alongside Cunha, helping himself to six goals in 16 league appearances so far.

Dave Edwards is a huge fan of Strand Larsen, and the 24-year-old has the goal-scoring expertise to drag the Wanderers to top-flight survival.

Not only is he clinical in front of goal but his hold-up play is also impeccable while his aerial ability and strength are further attributes that make him a great striker.

Every team needs a talented forward in the fight against relegation, and the ‘quality’ Strand Larsen will be crucial for Wolves to stand any chance of continuing their Premier League journey.

Vitor Pereira’s style of play will suit Strand Larsen

Pereira will bring an exciting style of play to Wolves with high pressing out of possession and lots of control on the ball.

Earlier this year, the incoming Wanderers boss spoke about his reasons for joining Al Shabab and said: “The Shabab squad quickly embraced my style. They love to play an offensive game with possession and control of the ball, as well as high pressure when off it.

“We have increased our level since I joined. The team is developing well, and we are building for the future. I think we can do important things in this league.”

Pereira’s biggest task, aside from improving a defence that conceded 40 goals in 16 games, will be to improve the supply line into Strand Larsen.

The towering Norwegian can often cut an isolated figure, although that could be about to change, as a high-pressing and attacking style will surely see him receive more quality service.
