Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl was a contender for the Leicester City job before Ruud van Nistelrooy’s appointment, as per Florian Plettenberg.
Sheffield Wednesday have had Danny Rohl at the helm since October 2023, bringing him in as the replacement for Xisco Munoz early last season.
The German had coached at a high level before alongside some notable bosses such as Hansi Flick and Ralph Hasenhuttl. However, his appointment presented a gamble for the Owls given he had never been the lead man in a senior dugout before.

Rohl has allayed any previous concerns and some though. He has Wednesday sat 9th in the Championship table after leading them to an unlikely survival last season and is viewed as one of the best young coaches currently working in the country.
As such, links with a Sheffield Wednesday exit have circulated, with rumours ramping up regarding interest from managerless Southampton, where Rohl worked as a first-team coach.
Now though, it is said that he was also under consideration for the Leicester City job recently.
The Foxes appointed Ruud van Nistelrooy as Steve Cooper’s replacement but Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg states Rohl was a contender for the previously vacant managerial post.
Plettenberg echoes reports of Southampton’s interest in the Sheffield Wednesday boss after Russell Martin’s sacking too.

Inevitable interest
There might have been links between Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl and previously vacant jobs but it’s never felt like there was a very real chance of him leaving the club.
However, that may be changing.

Leicester City filled their vacant post with Ruud van Nistelrooy, but Rohl appears to be a serious contender for the Southampton job. They’ve appointed young, up-and-coming bosses before and the German of course has history there after his work alongside Ralph Hasenhuttl.

What remains to be seen is whether the Saints zero in on Rohl as their top contender. If they do, the Owls will have a fight on their hands to keep him.
Rohl’s hints…
Although Rohl hasn’t made any direct comments about his future, he’s been clear about wanting Sheffield Wednesday to align with his ambitions. A manager, especially such a talented one like him, needs the club they are at to match their trajectory.
The January transfer window could be key in the Owls showing they are on the same page as Rohl.
If not, attractive Premier League jobs like the vacant Southampton post are going to catch his eye.
