Sven Botman won’t be returning to first-team action this week, despite appearing for the under-21s on Monday night.

The Dutchman played an hour in the youngster’s 3-2 win over Chelsea at Whitley Park on what was his first appearance since undergoing ACL surgery in March.

“He was good last night, we exchanged messages after the game and he seemed in a really good place, and that is always a good step when you play the first game,” said Howe.

“I thought his movement was a good, typical Sven. He used the ball well and looked commanding, a big presence on the pitch. He’s a massive for us, we’ve missed him. That’s a big step forward but he’s still got a little bit to go before selection.”

Newcastle host Brentford in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday before travelling to Ipswich Town at the weekend. Botman isn’t expected to be involved in either game.

United then welcome Aston Villa to St James’ Park on Boxing Day before ending the year with a trip to Manchester United.

“I think we were looking right to the end of December beginning of January, and that remains the plan,” Howe said. “I think with the length of time Sven has been out ideally he gets two to three, maybe more games, to get his rhythm back.”

Howe will be without midfielder Sean Longstaff for the visit of Brentford due to suspension. That will see Lewis Miley return to the senior squad after playing the last three matches with the under-21s.

“He played last night [against Chelsea] albeit for a short period as he will be involved with us tomorrow,” said Howe. “Getting his rhythm back is a really underrated thing. Players can rush that final part so when Lewis now plays in the first-team he will be at a really good level because of that.”
