A Chelsea player has reportedly failed a doping test, explaining his recent absence.
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has reportedly been suspended from football over an alleged failed doping test. The winger has missed Chelsea’s last five outings with no clear explanation from head coach Enzo Maresca.
Reports surfaced on Tuesday morning in Ukraine, claiming that Mudryk had turned in a positive drugs test after allegedly taking an illegal substance that is only available outside of the UK. Those reports have now been followed by a Daily Mail report that says Mudryk has been provisionally suspended from football due to a failed test, with the FA notifying the winger in recent days.
Mudryk will have the chance to respond to the allegations while his suspension is still provisional. That will give him the chance to provide evidence in the case the substance was taken for medical reasons. Meanwhile, it’s reported Chelsea have launched an investigation into the issue, with the allegations surrounding a ‘contaminated supplement’.
It’s reported that Mudryk passed a drug test in August, and he maintains that he has not changed his behaviour since then. The player is awaiting the ‘B’ sample testing to find out whether it supports the findings of the ‘A’ sample. During drug testing, a main sample is tested first, and the ‘B’ sample is only opened in the case of a positive test.
The report adds that Mudryk is co-operating with the club and the investigation, and that the Blues are currently supportive of his explanations. The Daily Mail have contacted the sports law firm representing Mudryk, and they say he has not yet been charged with any doping offence. London World has contacted ProStar, Mudryk’s agency, for comment, but we are yet to receive a response.
Chelsea make statement
A Chelsea club statement on the situation read: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm the Football Association recently contacted our player Mykhailo Mudryk concerning an adverse finding in a routine urine test.
“Both the Club and Mykhailo fully support The FA’s testing programme and all our players, including Mykhailo, are regularly tested. Mykhailo has confirmed categorically that he has never knowingly used any banned substances. Both Mykhailo and the Club will now work with the relevant authorities to establish what has caused the adverse finding. The Club will not be commenting any further.”
