Tempers flared after Wolves' defeat to Ipswich

Wolves star Matheus Cunha has been hit with an FA charge for his furious clash with an Ipswich staff member.

The Brazilian was at the heart of some shocking scenes at the conclusion of his side's 2-1 defeat at Molineux. He appeared to strike a member of the Ipswich coaching team.

It came after tempers had flared between the two sides - Rayan Ait-Nouri getting sent off in the resultant aftermath. Images also showed Cunha snatching a pair of glasses from an Ipswich member of staff's face.

Mirror Football understands that the FA were waiting to see if referee Simon Hooper included the incident in his match report before triggering an investigation. And they have now announced a charge for the Wolves star.

A statement read on Tuesday read: "Matheus Cunha has been charged with misconduct following the Premier League match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town on Saturday, 14 December.

"The forward allegedly acted in an improper manner after the final whistle. He has until Thursday, 19 December, to provide a response."

Cunha could now potentially face a ban. Wolves take on relegation rivals Leicester at the King Power Stadium this weekend. Cunha, 25, has been a key player for Wolves this season, scoring eight goals in 16 Premier League appearances.

Ex-Premier League referee Mike Dean believed at the time that Cunha could face further action. He said: "Going back to the suspension. Cunha, the biggest player that they’ve got. I’ve watched the footage back afterwards.

"He elbows the back of the head of one of the Ipswich coaches. Then he pulls his glasses off and throws them to the pitch. For me, I think he’ll be in trouble with the FA."

Gary O'Neil - who was sacked after the game - was asked about the incident involving Ait-Nouri. He said: "I haven't seen it. I have just been told he received a second yellow. I spoke to him during the game. We are under a lot of pressure.

"We are trying to push the group beyond our level and you can't get yourself in trouble. We are stretched as it is. We need Rayan and now we don't have him. I will deal with that internally.

"I understand the players being emotional but we have to keep control better. For two players not to be in the right place for a corner, at home to Ipswich, in the last seconds, shows they are not able to think clearly enough in those moments."
