Mykhailo Mudryk has been contacted by the FA over an “adverse finding" from a routine urine test.
Chelsea star Mykhailo Mudryk has expressed his shock after he confirmed he had provided a urine sample to the Football Association that contained a banned substance. News emerged on Tuesday that the Ukrainian international had been contacted by the FA over an “adverse finding” from a routine urine test.
The player is awaiting the return of ‘B’ sample test to find out whether it supports the findings of the ‘A’ sample. During drug testing, a main sample is tested first, and the ‘B’ sample is only opened in the case of a positive test. The player has issued a statement on social media and insisted he has not intentionally taken a banned substance and that he is working with his team to find out where the banned substance may have come from.
He said: "I can confirm that I have been notified that a sample I provided to The FA contained a banned substance. This has come as a complete shock as I have never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules, and am working closely with my team to investigate how this could have happened. I know that I have not done anything wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the pitch soon. I cannot say any more now due to the confidentiality of the process, but I will as soon as I can."
Chelsea have issued a statement of their own, offering support to the player and outlining their intention to investigate what has caused the adverse finding. The Chelsea statement read: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm the Football Association recently contacted our player Mykhailo Mudryk concerning an adverse finding in a routine urine test. Both the Club and Mykhailo fully support The FA’s testing programme and all our players, including Mykhailo, are regularly tested. Mykhailo has confirmed categorically that he has never knowingly used any banned substances. Both Mykhailo and the Club will now work with the relevant authorities to establish what has caused the adverse finding. The Club will not be commenting any further.”
Mudryk has not played for Chelsea since scoring in a 2-0 win at Heidenheim in the Europa Conference League on November 28. He was an unused substitute as Enzo Maresca’s side cruised to a 3-0 win over Aston Villa on December 1 but has been out with an unspecified illness since that game.
