Thomas Frank says who are 'favourites' for Newcastle United vs Brentford in the Carabao Cup

Newcastle United will be out for revenge against Brentford in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The Magpies are competing for a place in the final four of the Carabao Cup, while it is also an opportunity to atone for a recent defeat.

Newcastle lost to Brentford earlier this month, putting in a rotten display at the Gtech Community Stadium. Alan Shearer criticised Newcastle’s performance, while Eddie Howe was not happy either.

His side responded with a 4-0 win over Leicester City, and now they have the chance to put things right against Brentford.

This time the two sides meet at St James’ Park, as they face each other in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Based on their meeting less than two weeks ago, Brentford are the favourites for this cup tie.

However, Thomas Frank disagrees, telling the media that Newcastle United are actually the favourites to advance to the semi-final on Wednesday night.

Frank is right despite recently beating Newcastle United

There was a real chasm between Newcastle United and Brentford in West London earlier this month. On that evidence, the Bees should be favourites on Wednesday night.

However, that was the first time that Brentford have beaten Newcastle since they won promotion to the Premier League. Going into that game, Eddie Howe’s side had won five in a row against them.

On top of that, this game is at St James’ Park. Newcastle are much stronger at home, while Brentford are considerably weaker on the road. They have only won one away game all season, and that was against Colchester United in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Brentford are sweating on Igor Thiago’s fitness ahead of the game, while it looks like the Magpies do not have any fresh injury concerns of their own.

Eddie Howe says Lewis Miley will be involved, while Sean Longstaff is suspended.
