Thomas Frank makes comment about Newcastle fans and says £77,000-a-week Magpies man is 'fantastic'

Newcastle welcome Brentford to St James’ Park for a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash on Wednesday.

The Magpies made it to the last eight after recording a 2-0 win over Chelsea at the same venue, while the Bees reached this stage after defeating Sheffield Wednesday on penalties.

Danny Rohl, who could join Southampton to replace Russell Martin, watched his side draw 1-1 with Brentford in normal time before the shootout.

As Thomas Frank spoke to the media ahead of this Carabao Cup quarter-final, the Dane made a comment about Newcastle fans and Eddie Howe.

Thomas Frank hails “fantastic” Eddie Howe ahead of Newcastle vs Brentford

As quoted by the BBC, the 51-year-old said: “It (St James’ Park) is one of the greatest stadiums in the country and the fans will be up for it. It will be a heated atmosphere, I think they have fantastic fans and are coached by a fantastic manager in Eddie Howe.

“It is going to be a tough challenge in every aspect. We are up for it. We are really taking this competition serious and really want to progress to the semi-final.”

Brentford will potentially have a mental advantage coming into this game, having only recently beaten Newcastle by a 4-2 scoreline in Premier League action at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Magpies did – however – fight back to equalise twice in that game, so the encounter at St James’ Park will surely be an entertaining one with silverware in touching distance for the winner.

How Thomas Frank has fared against Eddie Howe

The man born in Frederiksværk calls Howe “fantastic” for a reason – he has a woeful record against the Englishman.

In seven matches against the £77,000-a-week tactician, Frank, who was linked to Manchester United, has only tasted victory once, losing five of these games while, of course, drawing the other.

Date Competition Season Home Team Score Away Team

Dec 7th 2024 Premier League 2024/25 Brentford 4-2

May 19th 2024 Premier League 2023/24 Brentford 2-4

Sep 16th 2023 Premier League 2023/24 Newcastle 1-0

Apr 8th 2023 Premier League 2022/23 Brentford 1-2

Oct 8th 2022 Premier League 2022/23 Newcastle 5-1

Feb 26th 2022 Premier League 2021/22 Brentford 0-2

Nov 20th 2021 Premier League 2021/22 Newcastle 3-3

Therefore, you can understand why Frank is pledging to take this game in a “serious” manner as he not only looks to guide Brentford into the semi-final, but also get one over on Howe, who he has truly struggled to beat over the years.
