Djed Spence finally made his first Premier League start for Tottenham vs Southampton
Tottenham Hotspur proved too good for Southampton on Sunday, smashing the hosts 5-0 at the St Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League. The victory at Southampton helped the North Londoners end their five-game winless run across all competitions.
Naturally, Ange Postecoglou would have been frustrated after his team’s recent string of results. He had come under some pressure after the 1-1 away draw at Rangers in the Europa League last week. Just as the pressure was cranking up, his boys delivered arguably the season’s best performance at the South Coast.
Unfortunately, Ange Postecoglou has been dealing with a lot of injury problems this term. He was without 10 first-team players on Sunday, and having played an intense game in midweek at the Ibrox, it was obvious he’d make changes to his starting XI against the Saints. To almost every fan’s surprise, he handed Djed Spence his much-awaited first Premier League start in a Tottenham shirt.

Djed Spence was fantastic in Tottenham’s big win over Southampton
Djed Spence wasted no time as he sought to impress the Spurs boss, surging forward before sliding a weighted pass into James Maddison, who put the visitors 1-0 up within 40 seconds. He produced a fantastic performance on the night, lasting 77 minutes albeit against an abysmal Southampton side.
Dissecting the game in the latest episode of Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham, both Rob Guest and Lee Wilmot were delighted with the performance of Djed Spence.
Wilmot said the full-back proved to Big Ange that he deserves to keep his place in the side moving forward. Adding to that, Wilmot claimed that he has now made himself “undroppable” for the Thursday night Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Manchester United.
“I think, proving to Ange Postecoglou what he can do and showing that he is kind of worthy of his place moving forward as well, I think,” Wilmot said.
“Yeah, very much. I mean, in terms of Spence now, he’s like… maybe even made himself a bit of an undroppable for Thursday night after that performance,” Guest stated.
Spence showed his quality on both sides of Spurs’ defence in the win; he started in his natural right-back position before Destiny Udogie’s injury forced Big Ange to switch him onto the left. The Englishman grabbed the opportunity with both hands, repaying the Greek-Aussie’s tactician.

Perhaps the attacking full-back will now be handed more chances as a result. However, Spence’s night at the St Mary’s Stadium ended on a worrying note, with Football London correspondent Alasdair Gold reporting that the 24-year-old was seen limping after the final whistle.

It may be either a cramp or fatigue from his first start of the season, but it does remain a worry for Big Ange considering the grim injury situation of late. We can all hope that it was nothing serious and Spence is fully fit and ready to start against Man United in the Carabao Cup.
