Aston Villa players celebrate winning the penalty shoot-out during the Vertu Trophy

The winner for the third round of the Vertu Trophy between Aston Villa's under-21s and Blackpool was eventually found after 38 penalties.

Villa defeated Steve Bruce's Blackpool 18-17 in a penalty shootout after the sides were unable to get past a 1-1 draw in normal time at Bloomfield Road. The hosts opened the scoring through Elliot Embleton after the break as Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba equalised for Villa 12 minutes from time.

The game reached a gripping finale as 38 consecutive penalties finally ended when Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel hit the post - allowing Villa to book a place in the third-round of the competition.

A number of players had to take more than one penalty, including the likes of Luka Lynch, Kane Taylor, Todd Alcock, Aidan Borland, George Hemmings and Mason Cotcher. Josep Gombau's side will now face Bradford City at home on January 14.

Bradford meanwhile, came away 3-2 winners at Stockport last week. Following the result, several Villa supporters took to social media to congratulate the young Lions.

One fan said: "Amazing lads," before another added: "Well played lads. What a watch that was!" A third continued: "Congrats boys!" and another stated: "Up the youngens!"

Elsewhere in the competition, Birmingham City and Walsall have also booked a place in the third round following wins over Exeter City and Reading respectively.
