Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner reveals penalty shootout approach

Europa League winner Oliver Glasner will draw upon his time at Eintracht Frankfurt should Crystal Palace's Carabao Cup quarter-final head to penalties on Wednesday.

The Eagles have lost their last six penalty shootouts, last winning on penalties in 2003 against Torquay United in the first round of the League Cup.

However, Glasner has a much better relationship with spot-kicks, with the biggest night of his managerial career being decided from the penalty spot when Frankfurt defeated Rangers in the 2022 Europa League final.

Explaining how he decides his penalty takers, the Austrian imparted his adaptable approach, drawing on Rafael Santos Borre's UEFA Cup-winning performance for Frankfurt.

"Now we have five subs, it could be that 50% of the starters won’t be on the pitch anymore. I can write who will score a penalty, but maybe all five won’t be on the pitch at the end.

"Of course, we know our players because sometimes, after training, they do penalty shooting. You can’t imitate the pressure, but we know who has confidence.

"Also, there’s the element of how the game is going. I had a situation where we won a big trophy in a penalty shoot-out.

"The last penalty scorer was not the guy who looked the best during the whole year, but he was the best player in this game.

"He scored the equaliser. He had a lot of confidence. So he took the last penalty. We scored and won the trophy.

"Even if we don’t plan \[on a player\] delivering a penalty. If someone is having an outstanding game with a lot of confidence, then he should be one of the takers."
