Brighton keeping tabs on Championship striker

Brighton are keeping tabs on Coventry City striker Norman Bassette, according to a report by Football League World.

Coventry City swooped to sign the youngster in the last transfer window and he is now said to be being watched by teams higher up the football pyramid. He is under contract with the Championship side until the summer of 2028.

Bassette, 20, was snapped up by the Sky Blues as one for the future under their former manager Mark Robins back in August. He has since been replaced in the dugout at the CBS Arena by former Derby County, Chelsea and Everton boss Frank Lampard.

According to Football League World, Brighton are monitoring Bassette’s progress at the moment along with fellow Premier League outfit Newcastle United. It remains to be seen at this stage whether either are preparing an official bid ahead of January or whether they are just watching him.

Coventry City landed the prospect to add more competition and depth to their attacking ranks.

He has scored one goal in 12 games in the league so far this season and has picked up five yellow cards.

Bassette is a player with potential and is someone who the Sky Blues hope will develop with them down the line.

After landing him, their former boss Robins said, as per BBC Sport: “Norman is a confident young man already at 19 and we look forward to working with him.

“He’s a young player, with good experience. He has a lot of really good attributes and a huge amount of potential.”

The Belgium international, who has one cap under his belt so far, started his career at Virton and rose up through their academy ranks.

He was a regular at various different youth levels for the Belgian second tier side before Caen came calling.

Bassette initially broke into the B team of the French club before breaking into their first-team.

He also had a loan spell away at Mechelen to get some experience and boost his development.

What now?

Coventry City signed Bassette as a long-term addition and they won’t want to lose him anytime soon amid talk of Brighton and Newcastle United scouting him.

Lampard’s men won 2-1 at home to Hull City last time out and came from behind to beat the Tigers after falling behind in the first-half.

They are back in action this weekend against Portsmouth away.
