Aston Villa could end up paying as much as £8milllion to sign Peirce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday.

As reported by Joe Crann via The Star [16 December], Villa are keeping tabs on the goalkeeper, although they don’t have any imminent plans to sign the 19-year-old.

Charles is reportedly on a shortlist of potential signings in the West Midlands, but could yet sign a new contract at Hillsborough, with multiple EFL clubs also interested in taking him on loan in January.

And ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – has speculated the kind of money which could potentially be involved in a deal.

“Villa would need to pay at least £1million and include a sell-on clause,” King said.

“I would imagine it would be an initial £1million, and then as he progresses the fee would increase, probably to around £8million. However, for that to happen, he would need to put in positive performances and probably get picked internationally as well.”

Aston Villa to sign Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles?

Villa already have arguably the best goalkeeper in the world in Emiliano Martínez, and the 32-year-old recently reminded fans of that fact by wowing Gary Lineker with an “incredible” moment.

Therefore, they are unlikely to have any immediate plans to replace the World Cup winner, especially considering he is contracted at the club until June 2029 after signing a new deal this season.

However, seeing as Martínez is in his thirties, Villa might be thinking about a long-term replacement, which would explain why they are looking at a 19-year-old between the sticks.

Charles was the starting goalkeeper for the Owls this season in the EFL Cup before their eventual elimination. He has also been included in the majority of the club’s matchday squads in the Championship this term.

Therefore it is clear to see how highly rated he is. However, if Villa are going to have to pay up to £8million to sign him, they need to ensure he is the right player for them.
