Manchester United transfer target Matheus Cunha has teased a switch to Old Trafford ahead of the January transfer window. The Wolves forward has been linked with a move amid speculation that Ruben Amorim is about to conduct a major overhaul of his squad over the coming months.
Cunha has been in excellent form this season despite Wolves struggling to accumulate points in the Premier League. The Brazilian has scored eight goals and provided three assists in 16 top-flight outings so far.
His form for the Midlands side, who are 19th and sacked manager Gary O’Neil last weekend, has prompted reports that he could be set for a transfer to a Big Six club this winter. United have been linked as they attempt to improve Amorim’s forward line.
Cunha has now poured fuel on that speculation by liking a social media comment which said he was joining the Red Devils ‘soon’. A United fan commented on his latest Instagram post with: “Manchester United soon.”
The 25-year-old liked the comment, perhaps to tease his interest in a potential deal.
An 11-cap Brazil international, Cunha was signed by Wolves from Atletico Madrid for £44million following an initial loan spell. Interested parties will therefore be expected to pay at least £50m if they wish to sign him next month.
Cunha faces a potential suspension after being charged by the Football Association earlier this week. He was involved in an altercation following Wolves’ 2-1 defeat by Ipswich and was seen grabbing the glasses from the face of a member of the opposition’s staff.
Meanwhile, United are set to improve their attack over the coming transfer windows. Amorim made the bold call to drop Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from the travelling squad for last weekend’s Manchester derby.
Rashford, in particular, seems to be facing a bleak future at Old Trafford. The 27-year-old has been strongly linked with an exit and could seal a departure in January or at the end of the campaign. It remains to be seen whether he is involved in United’s Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Tottenham.
Amorim’s decision was justified as he secured the biggest victory of his short reign so far. Amad Diallo was hugely impressive in United’s late comeback, winning the penalty from which Bruno Fernandes equalised before scoring a stunning late goal to help the Red Devils win 2-1.
It remains to be seen if United are active in the January market. In addition to new forwards, a left-wing-back could also be beneficial.
