Journalist says whether or not Arsenal could afford to sign Marcus Rashford in January

Marcus Rashford is ready to leave Manchester United, and a number of teams will be on red alert after hearing that news.

PSG have been looking at Rashford for a long time now, while Rashford was linked with Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal ultimately landed Raheem Sterling in the summer, and a move for Rashford didn’t go ahead.

However, Sterling has been underwhelming since arriving in north London, and Arsenal are in the market for a new winger.

Nico Williams is an Arsenal target, while Rafael Leao has also been linked to Arsenal.

Rashford’s availability won’t have gone unnoticed at the Emirates either, and according to Martin Lipton, speaking on Off The Ball, Arsenal can indeed afford a move for Rashford.

Arsenal can afford Rashford

Lipton spoke about Rashford’s options in January.

The journalist joked that Manchester United’s direct rivals couldn’t afford the attacker, claiming that he’d cost too much for a team like Bournemouth, but he did note that Arsenal can afford a move for the England international.

“You talk about not selling to a direct rival. When I look at the table I don’t think Bournemouth could afford him. However, Arsenal could. Arsenal need a centre-forward and they need an upgrade on Martinelli. Whether he’d want to go there I know not, but if there’s any team that could do with Marcus Rashford you’d say it’s Arsenal wouldn’t you?” Lipton said.

How much does Marcus Rashford earn?

Arsenal can afford Rashford in January, but make no mistake about it, this would eat into their finances.

Indeed, Rashford is a seriously high-earner.

According to Capology, Rashford has a base salary of £300,000-week with £75,000 in potential bonuses on top of that.

If Arsenal signed Rashford on that salary, he would immediately become the club’s highest-earner.

Arsenal’s highest earners Reported weekly wage

Kai Havertz £280,000

Gabriel Jesus £265,000

Declan Rice £240,000

Martin Odegaard £240,000

Thomas Partey £200,000

Arsenal would be changing their wage structure if they signed Rashford on that salary, and it may not be worth it.

Players such as William Saliba and Bukayo Saka could easily ask for serious payrises if Rashford came in on such a huge wage, and, ultimately, Rashford may not be worth the hassle.

This is a deal that is very intriguing, that much is for sure, but whether or not there’s any value in this deal is another topic entirely.
