Andy Cole believes Alexander Isak can achieve “Erling Haaland” numbers at Newcastle United - providing he stays fit.

An impressive 38 goals in 66 Premier League games since joining the Magpies has cemented the Swede as one of the division’s best strikers. Isak endured a slow start to 2024-25 but has netted seven in his last nine fixtures across all competitions.

That takes his tally to eight strikes from 16 games for the campaign and Newcastle will be hoping the best is yet to come. A broken toe hampered his progress earlier this season - with niggling injury concerns a downside to Isak’s time at St James’ Park.

While not as prone to the treatment table as Callum Wilson, the 25-year-old has suffered several setbacks to hamper his progress. Isak will be relied upon heavily during the busy hectic period due to Wilson’s recent hamstring strain.

But when fit and firing - as he has been for the past nine games - Newcastle boast a serious attacking asset. Capable of leading the line and bamboozling defenders with pace and guile, Isak has been described as United’s best striker since Alan Shearer.

His heroics fuelled speculation over the summer, with Arsenal reportedly expressing interest. However, with four years remaining on a contract signed in August 2022, the ball remains in Newcastle’s court.

Former Toon goal machine Cole has backed Isak to match Haaland’s numbers should he banish his injury demons. He told CardPlayer: “I love watching Alexander Isak, I love what he’s got, he just needs to stay fit. If he could stay fit then Newcastle would be a lot higher up the table.

“He has creativity, he has pace, he has all the attributes and you can see why other clubs are interested in him. If he stayed fit you’d be looking at something like Erling Haaland does at City in terms of consistently scoring goals. Newcastle would be in a much better position if he could stay fit.”
