Newcastle should be looking at recently linked Manchester United star, but it's not Marcus…

Ruben Amorim’s January transfer window firesale has stirred up rumours linking a pair of Manchester United players with a move to Newcastle.

Marcus Rashford has grabbed headlines after the boyhood Red Devil admitted he is ready for a new challenge amidst what is set to be a mass mid-season shake-up at Old Trafford.

The confession brought to light rumours linking Toon with a potential move for the 27-year-old. The further recent injury to Callum Wilson perhaps stoked the flames of the need to revitalise the attacking line, but Paul Mitchell would do well to look elsewhere within Man United’s squad for options.

Newcastle United look to Victor Lindelof for January deal

30-year-old Victor Lindelof is another who has been nudged towards the exit door at Old Trafford in what could prove to be a shrewd bit of business Lindelof available on a cut-price deal.

With 267 appearances under his belt on the red side of Manchester, the Premier League-proven centre-back is said to be available for as little as €7-8m (£6m) in the January window – though could be acquired for free if Newcastle can wait until the summer.

A once rigid, steadfast Toon defence has looked somewhat hapless in recent weeks which may have sparked the connection with the Sweden international. The Brentford defeat in the league in particular a poor showing for the back four.

As Sven Botman is set to return in the coming weeks after featuring for the under-21s on Monday night, while Lindelof’s estimated wage of £120k would make him one of the top earners in a PSR struggling Tyneside, is this the smartest move for Eddie Howe’s side?

Should Newcastle prioritise Lindelof transfer in January?

As alluded to, Newcastle have had their well-documented woes with Profit & Sustainability Rules that have forced them into the sale of talents such as Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, while Kieran Trippier has now been linked with a move away to clear a chunk of the wage bill.

It would then be somewhat illogical to bring in Lindelof who would be in the region of the same salary as the England right-back, if not more, in a Newcastle side that should realistically be looking to bolster their right-wing position first and foremost.

Premier League and continental interest in the Man U man also provide further difficulties in securing Lindelof on the best terms possible. West Ham and Everton, as well as a cohort of Serie A clubs, are said to be monitoring the Swede’s situation making a deal less likely.

Newcastle could certainly do worse than acquiring the services of the experienced defender on a cheap deal, but it would have to be in the right price range for the signing to make sense.
