The surprising thing Vitor Pereira has done at Wolves before being announced as new manager

A fresh update has emerged on Vitor Pereira as Wolves close in on their new managerial appointment.

Wolves finally sacked Gary O’Neil on Sunday after the Old Gold were beaten 2-1 by Ipswich Town – their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat.

Just hours after dismissing O’Neil, Wolves identified Vitor Pereira as his replacement, the Portuguese boss managing Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab.

Pereira, who has agreed an 18-month contract at Molineux, is on the verge of being appointed after the club agreed to pay his £830,000 release clause.

Entering English football as a manager for the very first time, the 56-year-old has a huge task on his hands to drag Wolves to safety, as they’re currently five points adrift of 17th place Leicester City.

But, the fans are also thrilled about a new era under the Portuguese, with an exciting update now emerging ahead of his appointment.

Vitor Pereira has already taken Wolves training

From sacking O’Neil to nearly hiring Pereira in a matter of days, it’s been an unusually swift process for Wolves to get a new manager in.

Simon Jordan thinks Pereira can do well at Wolves and help them stave off relegation, although he will have to do a lot of work to turn their fortunes around.

That being said, the experienced manager already appears to be stamping his authority at the club, with journalist Alex Richards reporting that he is ‘through the door’ and ready to ‘take training’ this afternoon.

This is encouraging news for Wolves ahead of their crucial relegation six-pointer against Leicester City on Sunday as they’ll hope their new manager is in the dugout for it.

Pereira can keep Wolves in the Premier League by doing one thing

Wolves fans will have their reservations about Pereira, as he’s never managed in the Premier League, although his credentials elsewhere suggest he could be a solid appointment.

Vitor Pereira as a manager

Clubs – 12

Games managed – 642

Wins – 346

Draws – 155

Losses – 141

Win percentage – 53.89%

Trophies won – 8 (including 4 league titles)

A win percentage of 53%, in particular, suggests he gets the best out of a club no matter where he’s been, with Pereira flourishing under difficult conditions at Corinthians.

The job he’s taking on this time around, though, is arguably his toughest yet, entering a league he’s never managed in with the club second bottom.

It’s become obvious straight away that for Pereira to keep the Old Gold in the Premier League, he’ll need to fix their defensive woes with Wolves expected to sign two defenders in January.

Indeed, the biggest task on his hands is improving their record from dead balls, as Wolves have conceded 16 goals from set-pieces – more than double any other side.

If he can somehow turn his side into an organised unit who are much harder to beat, their quality in attack can fire them to survival.
