Bruno Guimaraes has ordered his Newcastle United teammates to find “consistency” irrespective of their opponents.

Leicester City arrived at St James’ Park on Saturday and Toon fans could have been forgiven for fearing the worst. Newcastle were expected to beat West Ham United and Brighton earlier this season before being stunned by shock home defeats.

However, the Magpies responded to a 4-2 defeat at Brentford by putting Leicester to the sword in brutal fashion. Guimaraes bagged his first goal of the campaign in a convincing 4-0 win to prepare Newcastle for a crucial Carabao Cup clash.

Eddie Howe’s men welcome Brentford to Tyneside looking to avenge the loss from 11 days ago and book a place in next month’s semi-final. Newcastle reached the Carabao Cup final two seasons ago and remain eager to end the club’s 69-year wait without domestic silverware.

Winning tonight will go a long way to rejuvenating the feel-good factor around St James’ Park. Speaking to Sky Sports, Toon captain Guimaraes urged consistency from his players - while berating the recent defensive performances.

“Liverpool and Brentford were unacceptable (defensively). We are a team that defends very well. When we got to the Champions League we had one of the best defences in the league. Scoring my first goal of the season is something I was looking for. I was close, but in my point of view I (have been) unlucky.”
