'Wasted potential' - Marcus Rashford transfer verdict and the realistic fee Man United can…

Marcus Rashford could be sold by Manchester United in the January transfer window

Marcus Rashford's time at Manchester United is coming to an end, according to Manchester Evening News readers - though the Reds may struggle to realise a strong financial return if they decide to sell the forward in January.

Rashford's future at United looks uncertain after the England forward and Alejandro Garnacho were dropped entirely from Ruben Amorim's matchday squad for United's 2-1 derby win against Man City at the Etihad on Sunday.

Despite a memorable Manchester derby result, Rashford's future has dominated the headlines since. Amorim challenged both players to prove themselves and improve their standards both on and off the pitch - but Rashford dropped a bombshell on Tuesday by confirming that he is "ready for a new challenge".

On Wednesday Amorim put the ball back in Rashford's court (in public, at least) by claiming the "new challenge" he desires could be in restoring United to the top of the game. However, the Portuguese is likely to be unimpressed by having to engage with a transfer saga - a specialty at United in recent years - so soon after beating rivals City in their own backyard.

Rashford was not seen among United's travelling squad for Thursday night's Carabao Cup trip to Tottenham while Garnacho was reinstated, though Rashford had reported unwell for training on Monday - and the players had been given Tuesday off by Amorim. The MEN has asked the club for comment on Rashford's fitness.

With questions swirling over Rashford's fate, we have polled the MEN readership what they think of the situation. The early votes of over 2,000 readers leave Rashford's fate in no doubt with just 10 per cent agreeing that United should keep the 27-year-old, with 81% believing he should be moved on.

When asked how his United career would be viewed if he left, a big majority of 63% felt that Rashford has 'wasted his potential' at Old Trafford; just 5% consider him a 'legend'; 18% rate him as a 'big success'; 13% feel he was 'nothing special', and only 1% considers him a huge flop.

Intriguingly, while the majority of MEN readers feel that United shouldn't keep Rashford, 48% believe that Amorim is right to try and reintegrate the forward while 52% say he should be moved on. The closeness of that vote suggests fans want Amorim to at least offer Rashford the chance to resurrect his career, even if an exit seems the likelier option at this point.

As for a potential transfer fee, MEN readers are not holding out a massive amount of hope. Rashford was valued at close to £100m after his 30-goal season of 2022/23, but his value has dropped sharply since then - and his £325,000-a-week contract until 2028 makes the pool of suitors a shallow one. A 35% majority of voters feel a realistic fee would be £40m-£50m, with just 4% agreeing that the +£80m he was once worth is now a realistic target. However, 24% - the second-highest percentage who responded to the question - felt United could only expect up to £40m.
