Negotiations for Lamine Yamal’s renewal might not be straightforward despite his desire to stay at Barcelona

Over the coming months, FC Barcelona will focus on addressing several contract renewals, as several Blaugrana players have contracts set to expire in 2026.

The two players whose renewal operations are most advanced at this point in time are the midfielders Gavi and Pedri, as the Catalans are looking to conclude these operations before the end of the January transfer window.

According to SPORT, another renewal operation that is going to start in the first few weeks of January is that of Lamine Yamal, whose agent, Jorge Mendes, is already working to ensure he gets a contract that is more in line with his current status in the team and the world of football.

Yamal last signed a contract with Barcelona that goes till 2026, but at that time he also signed another agreement that would bind the young winger to the Catalan club till 2030. However, this was more of a sign of intent than an actual contract, and the Blaugranes and the player are both looking for another contract.

In the last year or so, especially since the UEFA EURO 2024, the Spaniard’s status in the footballing world has risen significantly. Barcelona understand that the economic aspects of his contract are already outdated, and they will have to change these numbers to reflect his changed status.

However, the Catalans have still not been able to solve their financial fair play problems, and they are not too keen to see their wage bill skyrocket once again after having made all the efforts in the last few years to bring it down.

On the other hand, Yamal and his entourage understand that he can get significantly higher wages at some other clubs, and he had already made sacrifices at the time of his last renewal, so he should get a contract that reflects his status as one of the best players in the world today.

Both the club and the player are currently clear that they want to continue working together going forward. However, they will still negotiate to arrive at the best possible contract for both parties. As things stand, a long and ascending contract can be an option as it would not put too much of a burden on Barcelona and will also ensure a rise in Yamal’s wages.
