Sheffield United given permission to speak to Premier League prospect

Sheffield United have been given permission to speak to Wolves youngster Lennon Patterson, as detailed in a report by The Standard.

Sheffield United could launch a move for the Premier League prospect. They are currently sat top of the Championship table above Leeds United and are eyeing an immediate return to the top flight under the guidance of Chris Wilder.

Patterson, 17, is facing an uncertain future at Wolves right now and it remains to be seen whether he will be staying at Molineux or leaving the Midlands for a new challenge somewhere else.

According to The Standard, he has been on trial at Arsenal recently. However, the Blades are seen as genuine candidates to sign him as well.

Sheffield United were relegated last season after finishing in the bottom three along with Burnley and Luton Town. They have since adapted well to life back in the Football League though.

Patterson could be seen by Sheffield United as someone to bolster their defensive ranks down the line.

He has been on the books at Wolves for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy ranks.

The teenager has been a regular for them at various different youth levels to date.

Patterson has been a key player for Wolves’ Under-18’s side over recent times and is yet to make a first-team appearance.

He hasn’t penned professional terms with his current club which means he can explore his options.

Sheffield United’s chances of landing him may well depend on what Arsenal decide to do.

The fact he has trialled with the Gunners suggests their pursuit of him has progressed further than that of the Blades’.

What now?

Sheffield United have the chance to bolster their ranks in the upcoming January transfer window.

They also have the opportunity to let some players head out the exit door at Bramall Lane should they wish to.

Their links to Patterson show they are keeping one eye on the future as well.

If he was to make the switch to South Yorkshire, he would want to break into their first-team at some point over the next few years.

Wilder’s men are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Cardiff City as they look to keep their momentum going over the festive period. They then face Scott Parker’s Burnley at home on Boxing Day.
