Premier League LIVE: Arsenal through to Carabao Cup semi-finals after Jesus hat-trick, Liverpool knock out Southampton, Newcastle progress

Back-to-back?

Arne Slot is determined to win the Carabao Cup again this year.

Liverpool got their hands on the trophy last season, claiming some silverware in Jurgen Klopp's farewell campaign.

Now, Slot wants to make it back-to-back successes.

He told Sky Sports after his side reached the semi-finals: "We have to defend the trophy because the club won it last season.

"I wasn't involved in it, but the players were and of course, Jurgen [Klopp] was with his staff.

"As a club, we want to compete for all trophies. But we are also aware of Arsenal, Newcastle, Tottenham and Manchester United.

"It's a tough competition for sure."

'Starting to see the best of him'

Sandro Tonali scored his first two goals since his Newcastle debut last season in his side's 3-1 win over Brentford tonight.

They were also his first club goals since returning from his ban.

So it was a perfect night for the Italian midfielder and his manager Eddie Howe is delighted with his form.

"I thought we scored some really good goals," Howe said.

"It was great to see Sandro score the two that he did. Just a really good feeling about the group at the moment.

"We are building in confidence all the time."

Continuing on Tonali, he added: "We are starting to see the best of him. The tweak in position has definitely helped him.

"He is a lot more comfortable when he is deeper on the pitch. He is showing all the qualities that we knew when we signed him.

"It is just about finding the right balance for him and the team."

Hat-trick hero

Mikel Arteta has praised Gabriel Jesus for his match-winning hat-trick at the Emirates that sent Arsenal through.

Jesus has struggled for minutes this season and he had only scored once in all competitions before tonight.

Arteta said: "'I'm so pleased for him. It’s been a long period for him without goals.

"To score the three types of goals and the many actions that he was involved in.

"It’s a great thing for the team that we can rely on a player with such quality."

The Gunners boss continued: "It’s now about consistency.

"It’s a moment of spark that will bring so much to the team that we can rely on him to change games.

"We need to give him more chances."
