The Magpies made it two League Cup semi-finals in three seasons on Wednesday.
Newcastle breezed past Brentford on Wednesday thanks to a brace from Sandro Tonali and a second-half strike by Fabian Schar.
Toon boss Eddie Howe will be pleased that the momentum from Newcastle’s win against Leicester on Saturday was taken over into the win against the Bees with his side hitting the ground running.
The Magpies opened the scoring at St James’ Park in just nine minutes, and the game was all but wrapped up with 20 minutes to play.
With the tie’s result a foregone conclusion, Howe brought on players who haven’t had much of a runout this season. Miguel Almiron and Newcastle’s latest signing, William Osula, all got minutes, with the latter coming close to finding the net in injury time.
However, one player didn’t come on despite getting Howe’s vote of confidence.

Lewis Miley didn’t play in Newcastle United’s win against Brentford
Lewis Miley spent the beginning of the season on the sidelines due to a metatarsal fracture and has only played one minute of first-team football for Howe this season coming on in the dying seconds of Newcastle’s win against Chelsea in October.
Miley played alongside Sven Botman for Newcastle’s under-21s on Monday playing 45 minutes in their 3-2 win at Whitley Park.

He could’ve managed a full 90 minutes but was taken off due to tactical reasons with Howe confirming Miley would be involved against Brentford. Unfortunately for him, the involvement would be nothing more than a warm-up and a game on the bench.
It isn’t the first time this has happened for the 18-year-old, he was named in Newcastle’s matchday squad for four consecutive Premier League games but failed to convert them into appearances.
Eddie Howe doesn’t want Lewis Miley to leave Newcastle in January
Howe realises the potential Miley has to become a fantastic player, his rise to Newcastle’s first-team squad is unlike anything fans have seen in recent years.
Last season, Miley made 26 appearances for the Magpies including three in the Champions League. He even bagged an assist in Newcastle’s defeat to AC Milan in December 2023.
His debut came against Chelsea at the end of the 2022/23 season and coincidentally his first goal for the club also came against the Blues.
In Howe’s pre-match press conference, which was aired on Newcastle’s website he was asked about whether he would consider a loan move for Miley in the January transfer window. He said: “No, Lewis will stay with us because he’s too important to lose.”
Despite the lack of involvement, Miley could still be named in the squad for Newcastle’s trip to Ipswich on Saturday.
