“I try to encourage him” – Tosin details what he’s trying to get “amazing” Chelsea player to do …

Tosin Adarabioyo hailed Josh Acheampong as an amazing player and is happy the teenager has signed a new contract with the club.

Acheampong was frozen out by Chelsea back in October, with the right back unable to play until he signed a new deal with the Blues.

It was strong action from the club given the academy graduate was under contract until 2026 and not in danger of leaving on a free transfer.

Acheampong missed a number of opportunities to add to his first team appearances during the stand off, but there were signs last month he was close to a new deal as he was spotted in training ahead of the Heidenheim game.

Although he didn’t feature in the travelling squad, progress continued to be made and he travelled and started the game against Astana last week, putting in an impressive performance in difficult conditions.

Chelsea officially confirmed on Wednesday Acheampong had signed a new four and a half year deal with the Blues and he looks set for a big future at the club.

With the persistent injury issues surrounding Reece James, it looks like there could be plenty more opportunities for Acheampong this season.

Maresca stated it would be his preference for Acheampong to stay with the group rather than go on loan, and it remains to be seen what Chelsea’s plans are for the youngster next season.

Speaking ahead of the Shamrock Rovers game on Thursday Tosin was asked for his thoughts on Acheampong and was full of praise for him.

“It’s great news, I’m happy to see that,” he told Chelsea’s website.

“He’s an amazing player and I’m very excited to see he’s here to stay.

“Josh has absolutely everything to be a top, top defender. He’s quick, he’s strong, he’s amazing on the ball, and he has a lot of confidence which I love to see in a young defender.

“I try to encourage him to be as vocal as possible because I think it’s a really important aspect as a defender and he’s learning to do so.”

Acheampong is in line to start against Shamrock and having been on the bench against Brentford it will be interesting to see if he’s named in the squad for Sunday’s trip to Everton.
