Confirmed Everton takeover has big impact on Man United's £70m transfer plan - opinion

Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite is still on Manchester United’s transfer radar heading into 2025.

The 22-year-old centre-back was one of Manchester United’s top targets in the summer with multiple bids submitted to try and secure his signature.

Jarrad Branthwaite was admired by Ineos but United were unable to get a deal over the line and instead turned their attention towards deals for Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.

However, United could be back in the market for a centre-back in 2025 with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans all out of contract in the summer.

Branthwaite is still wanted by United with club chiefs reportedly holding talks about a potential move.

Everton’s £70m price tag frustrated Branthwaite in the summer, and he was unwilling to sign a new contract at Goodison Park despite being offered an improved deal. That may now all change.

Everton takeover completed by Friedkin Group

In the summer, United were hoping that Everton’s weak financial situation would help land a deal for Jarrad Branthwaite but the Merseyside club stuck to their asking price.

At that point, the Toffees were owned by Farhad Moshiri who had put Everton up for sale and was clearly looking for an exit route.

As reported by Sky Sports, the Friedkin Group have now completed a majority takeover at Everton with a deal agreed to purchase Moshiri’s 94.1 percent stake.

The new owners at Everton have an estimated worth of £4.8bn.

In an official club statement, Everton’s new CEO Marc Watts said: “We are committed to leading Everton into an exciting new era both on and off the pitch.

“Providing immediate financial stability to the Club has been a key priority, and we are delighted to have achieved this.”

What Everton takeover means for Jarrad Branthwaite’s future

Branthwaite was open to joining United in the summer with personal terms already agreed.

Everton wanted to keep their star defender by offering him a new deal, but Branthwaite wanted £160,000 per week to sign a new deal at Goodison Park – the same wages offered to him by United in the summer.

The Toffees were unable to meet Branthwaite’s demands due to their poor finances and PSR restrictions, but the Friedkin Group takeover has promised to offer “financial stability”.

Everton’s new owners will no doubt want to keep hold of their best players and could now meet Branthwaite’s demands.

Branthwaite is currently under contract until 2027 which means his value will continue to drop as he inches closer to becoming a free agent. But signing a new deal under new owners has now become a very real possibility.

On top of that, Everton’s new owners can promise Branthwaite that new signings will be arriving at Goodison Park – something that previously looked unlikely.
