'He was determined': Jadon Sancho shares how Enzo Maresca convinced him to join Chelsea on FaceTime call

Enzo Maresca convinced Jadon Sancho to join Chelsea over the summer and he will be glad that he did.

Jadon Sancho has been one of Chelsea‘s best performers this season, helping the Blues to climb to second in the Premier League table.

In the 10 top-flight appearances that the winger has made, he has scored two goals and provided three assists.

It has been said that Maresca really appreciates how good Sancho is in tight areas. The 24-year-old has now shared how his boss convinced him to move to west London.

Enzo Maresca really wanted Jadon Sancho at Chelsea

Sancho was a last-minute signing for Chelsea, who did not land the Englishman until the very end of the summer transfer window.

However, it looks like Maresca was very keen to bring him to Stamford Bridge. During their FaceTime call, the Italian showed Sancho his plans for him and where he saw him fitting in the team.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Sancho said: “I always supported Chelsea as a kid, because of Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba. And speaking to Enzo before I came here, he was determined to work with me.

“He showed me his plans of where he sees me fitting in the team, and telling me how I could help the team moving forward. That brought me here. He made me feel comfortable. I liked his energy on the FaceTime call we had.”

Since his move to the Blues, the England international has come in for a lot of praise. Sancho has caught Darren Bent’s eye, for example, with the former Premier League striker claiming that the wide man is playing so well at the moment.

Jadon Sancho explains why he left Manchester City

Before leaving Manchester United for Chelsea, Sancho spent some time at the Red Devils’ rivals Manchester City.

He left them for Borussia Dortmund back in 2017 and has explained why he chose to do so.

In the same interview with Chelsea’s site, Sancho said: “It was when City bought [Riyad] Mahrez and Leroy Sane. For a young player like me, I felt it was the right time to move on. I felt I was ready to play first team.

“It was not that I didn’t want to wait and play under Pep Guardiola, one of the best coaches ever, it was that in my mind I felt I was ready. I felt like they had other plans. That was why I made the jump to Dortmund.”

Sancho is not the only ex-City academy player now at Chelsea. Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia and Tosin Adarabioyo all spent time at the Etihad.

With a faltering attack and ageing midfield, Pep Guardiola could probably do with Sancho, Palmer and Lavia now. City’s loss has certainly been Chelsea’s gain, and the Citizens now find themselves behind Maresca’s men in the Premier League table.
