Liverpool left some of their big hitters at home on Wednesday as they navigated past Southampton and into the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Arne Slot was keen to keep some of his most important players with fresh legs ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Tottenham, with a more youthful look to the matchday squad.
One of those left behind on Merseyside was Mohamed Salah, who has been in tremendous form recently.
Salah has a legitimate claim to be the world’s most in-form player just now, having scored 10 goals and laid on eight assists in his last 13 Liverpool games.
The Egyptian King is out of contract at Anfield next summer and his ridiculous levels have led to a clamour for the Liverpool owners to make sure he does not leave.
In the meantime, Salah has been getting praise from all corners of the football world. But according to Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon, it still is not quite what the 32-year-old deserves.

Anthony Gordon makes Mohamed Salah point
For a time last summer it had looked as though Gordon and Salah could have been playing together at Liverpool.
However, after Newcastle pulled the plug on a potential transfer of the England international, he has remained on Tyneside and even scored against the Reds earlier this month.

As a tricky winger himself, Gordon clearly has a lot to learn from the likes of Salah.
And when asked by Sky Sports to pick his ‘most iconic’ Premier League winger out of Salah, Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, Gordon could only pick the Liverpool legend.

“I just think he’s a machine,” raved the 23-year-old.
“I think to be at the top for so long the way he has, if you look at his stats from the first season he joined Liverpool he’s just been so consistently elite. Playing in the Prem every week as a winger I know how it is.”
Asked if Salah doesn’t quite get the credit he deserves at times, Gordon claimed that it may only be when he retires that the Egypt captain is given his due.
“I think he’s starting to [get the credit he deserves],” he said. “For me he’s the best winger I’ve seen in the Prem and maybe when he retires he will get that from other people but right now maybe he doesn’t get as much as he deserves.”
Will Gordon and Salah ever play together?
Gordon’s ebullient praise of Salah underlines just how big a Liverpool fan the Scouser is.
Of course, he could hold this view on Salah without having an affiliation to the Reds – plenty of people do – but it’s clear that it’s different for Gordon.
Before the former Everton man signed his new contract at Newcastle, it had looked as though Liverpool were lining up a move for Gordon in 2025.
Now, things are not quite so clear. There is no release clause within his deal and he would cost a huge amount to get out of St James’ Park.
With Salah’s future on the line too, it feels as though the chance for Gordon to play with his idol is starting to slip away. A real shame.
