Joelinton suffered a gruesome ear injury against Brentford

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton was rushed to hospital on Wednesday night after his "nasty" injury against Brentford.

The Magpies beat Brentford 3-1 in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals despite suffering a blow as Joelinton was taken off with a bloody ear. Images of the incident began circulating online, where Brentford's Nathan Collins appeared to strike Joelinton with a flying elbow before catching the Brazilian's head with his studs as he lay vulnerable on the ground.

An infuriated Joelinton immediately got up to confront the Republic of Ireland international. The midfield enforcer's team-mates rushed to drag him away from retaliating as referee Samuel Barrott failed to punish Collins for the incident.

Due to being brought off at half-time with a gruesome cut on his ear, the 28-year-old missed the team's customary post-win photograph after receiving treatment, instead being taken to hospital. There, his wounds were looked at, and he reportedly received stitches.

Head coach Eddie Howe said: "Joey had a cut to his ear. Which I think was quite nasty. So he had to go off and get that looked at." Joelinton will be unavailable anyway for the trip to Ipswich Town this weekend due to suspension, so he will get the opportunity to rest before the clash with Aston Villa on Boxing Day. His absence from the team on Saturday will end his 100 per cent appearance record in the Premier League this season.

Having first been bought as a striker for a club record fee of £40million in 2019, Joelinton's importance at the heart of the Newcastle midfield can be seen by his 20 appearances across all competitions this term. He has notched two goals in that time.

Meanwhile, his second-half replacement and injury returnee Joe Willock was praised for his performance by Howe. He said: "I thought Joe Willock looked bright when he came on today, so that’s a big plus for him. Sven (Botman) is not too far away, and hopefully that can be added competition for the centre-back positions."
