Darren Bent suggests Chelsea could sign'exceptional'Premier League star if one thing happens

Darren Bent has predicted that a Premier League goalkeeper could end up joining Chelsea in 2025.

The goalkeeper position at Stamford Bridge is one that’s regularly debated by Chelsea supporters. Even though Robert Sanchez is the clear number one for the Blues, he’s regularly come under criticism for some of his performances in-between the sticks.

Jamie Carragher thinks Chelsea needs a new goalkeeper as well as another central defender before they can win the Premier League title.

Darren Bent suggests Emiliano Martinez for Chelsea

TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent believes that Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, 32, may leave Villa Park next summer if his side fails to qualify for the Champions League.

He made the interesting claim that he could picture Chelsea attempting to sign the World Cup winner, too.

When discussing Villa goalkeeper Martinez on talkSPORT (4:42pm, 18 December), Bent said: “He’s exceptional… I wonder if they don’t get the Champions League again next season, I know he signed a new contract, does he go?

“He could play for any team he wanted to within reason, Chelsea could get him.”

Martinez did sign a new contract with Villa back in the summer, which keeps him with the Midlands club until 2029.

Should Chelsea target Emiliano Martinez?

Chelsea looked at Villa goalkeeper Martinez as a summer target, but he ended up staying put and signing a new deal. Instead, the Blues signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal to provide competition for Sanchez in net.

Of course, Martinez would be a statement addition at Stamford Bridge because he’s proven his top-class abilities since leaving Arsenal a few years ago.

There’s no doubt the incredible shot-stopper belongs in the Champions League every year, and he’s performing exceptionally in it this campaign with Villa. However, Villa sits seventh in the Premier League right now, so they face a big fight to get back in Europe’s elite club competition next season.
