Andy Cole believes Eddie Howe is “the right man” to lead Newcastle United following a recent upturn in results.

For the first time in his Toon career, pressure was beginning to build on the 47-year-old, who has been at the helm since November 2021. St James’ Park chiefs remained firmly behind Howe - as did the overwhelming majority of supporters - but there were murmurs of discontent on social media.

But back-to-back wins over Leicester City and Brentford have quelled the noise, with the Magpies booking a place in the Carabao Cup semi-final last night. Supporters are eagerly awaiting the draw as the prospect of another Wembley final begins filling Tyneside with optimism.

A trip to Premier League strugglers Ipswich Town also gives Newcastle a chance to heighten the enthusiasm levels. Three points could lift the Magpies as high as sixth - giving supporters peace of mind as they tuck into their Christmas dinner.

Howe became the first man since Sir Bobby Robson to lead Newcastle to two domestic cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Brentford. Speaking to Card Player, former United goal machine Cole backed the Toon boss to deliver success.

“Eddie Howe is the right man to get Newcastle back to the Champions League because he has shown that he can get them to those levels before,” he said. “The season before that we have to remember that they nearly got relegated.

“It was probably the case that they got into the Champions League earlier than they expected and it hasn’t been easy to follow up on that. But whatever happens this season, Howe has still done a fantastic job.”
