Report: Bayern Munich could shift focus to Xavi Simons if Florian Wirtz pursuit fails

According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Heiko Niedderer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich might not take a patient approach with Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz.

If Wirtz extends his contract with Leverkusen, Bayern Munich could quickly shift its focus to RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons (as if you needed another reason to watch Friday’s match):

Bayern are eyeing Xavi Simons as plan B should Florian Wirtz extend his contract at Bayer Leverkusen. Simons will be on the market in the summer after his loan deal at RB Leipzig expires. Max Eberl was already in very concrete talks with the Dutchman last summer before the latter ultimately decided to continue in Leipzig.

What can Bayern Munich fans take away from this? Well, the Bavarians seem intent on making a big money purchase and if Wirtz is not around, Bayern Munich might not wait for him.

That could be a problem, because once Bayern Munich drops upper-double figures on another attacking midfielder (though Simons can play wing as well), it will make it very unlikely that a Wirtz move could happen in 2026.

Bonus deep-state, tinfoil hat theory: Bayern Munich leaked this story to counter the reports about Wirtz rte-upping with Leverkusen, letting him know if he doesn’t move this summer, the club will spend its money elsewhere.
