Working with business improvement organisation Ipswich Central, Ipswich Borough Council has granted Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) powers to Ipswich Central's Street Security team, some of whom are former police officers, operated by My Local Bobby - a London based private security firm.
The move is intended to tackle anti-social drinking and promote a safer environment for residents and visitors to the town centre and is part of an ongoing campaign to fight anti-social behaviours in Ipswich.
A PSPO is a legal tool used by councils to help tackle specific issues that affect the quality of life of a community.
It sets specific rules for certain behaviours such as anti-social drinking. It doesn't involve the imposition of blanket bans but rather gives powers for authorised officers to take action if it is deemed appropriate.
In the case of Ipswich town centre, the PSPO doesn't ban all consumption of alcohol - but designated officers will have the power to ask people to stop drinking in public if they behaviour is problematic.
Should they fail to comply, officers have the power to confiscate their alcohol and issue fines.
Jack Abbott, Ipswich MP, said: “Anti-social behaviour is not a victimless crime, and I know that it is something that must be tackled if we are to revive our town centre.
“I have had a number of conversations with Ipswich Borough Council and Ipswich Central about this specific initiative, so I warmly welcome this new partnership which will look to address anti-social drinking.
“Ipswich Central's Street Security team already does an important job in supporting businesses and shoppers on our high street - supplementing the efforts of the police - and these new powers will help build on their good work."

Lee Walker, chief executive of Ipswich Central, added: "This agreement highlights the importance of our commitment to ensuring a safer Ipswich and more vibrant town.
"By equipping Ipswich Central's Street Security team with these new powers, we can do more to reduce antisocial drinking in the town centre.
"It’s a positive step forward that will help businesses, visitors and residents who all wish to see a tougher stance taken on street drinking in the town centre."
