A shock transfer should materialise between Chelsea and Aston Villa according to a member of the Premier League 100 club.

Former Villa record signing Darren Bent has suggested Emiliano Martinez should move to Chelsea if the Villans fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Bent, who scored 106 Premier League goals throughout his career including 61 for Villa, believes Martinez must play in Europe’s elite competition and should leave if Unai Emery fails to lead his side to the Champions League once more.

Widely regarded as the world’s number one, Martinez has kept 60 clean sheets in 181 appearances for Villa so far, conceding 222 goals. Before making his £20million switch in 2020, the World Cup winner preserved 16 clean sheets in 38 matches for Arsenal.

Such a talent simply must play in the best competitions available, Bent believes, as the ex-striker told talkSPORT: “I wonder if they don’t get the Champions League, I know he signed a new contract, but could he go? He could play for any team he wanted to, Chelsea could get him.”

It would be a very difficult transfer for the Blues to complete as Martinez only recently put pen to paper on a new long-term deal until June 2029. Nonetheless, Bent reckons it could be a good fit as Chelsea look set to re-enter the Champions League under manager Enzo Maresca’s stewardship.

The Londoners are also struggling to establish a clear number one as Robert Sanchez has been inconsistent and Filip Jorgensen’s chances have been far and far between. Realistically, Martinez is very unlikely to make the move to Stamford Bridge but Bent’s suggestion is bound to spark a conversation.
