'Too easy': Brentford star left fuming as Newcastle expose a weakness

Newcastle United are an aggressive team by nature.

It’s no surprise when you have the likes of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn starting for you every week you get a reputation for playing hard. As a result of that, Guimaraes and Fabian Schar are now suspended for the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle reached the semi-finals of the competition after a convincing win against Brentford which saw Sandro Tonali back on the scoresheet for the first time since August 2023.

Schar, an unlikely goalscoring asset this season finished off the tie ensuring Yoane Wissa’s late goal counted for nothing.

Brentford got the better of Newcastle two weeks prior but it was Eddie Howe’s side who made it two wins on the bounce after the Magpies beat Leicester on Saturday.

For some Brentford players, the quarter-final defeat was quite devastating.

Keane Lewis-Potter admits Brentford weren’t nasty enough in defeat to Newcastle United

Keane Lewis-Potter played 74 minutes in Brentford’s defeat to Newcastle and faced a tough challenge keeping winger Jacob Murphy quiet.

Two of Newcastle’s three goals came from set pieces, something they have found good fortune with recently.

Post-match, Lewis-Potter spoke in an interview for Brentford’s website assessing the poor result. He said:

“We need to have a bit of nastiness about us,”

“We’re expecting to score two/three/four goals every game – we can’t do that. We can’t go into away games expecting to do that and win games, it’s not going to happen.”

Adding to that, the left-back added: “They score the first one – that’s going to happen in football – but we can’t let our heads drop.

“And we have to be more solid and aggressive from set-pieces, it’s too easy. It’s difficult right now.”

Newcastle United target Bryan Mbuemo gets a taste of St James’ Park atmosphere

Mbeumo ran rampant in the Magpies defeat at the Gtech Community stadium with Mbuemo finding the net early on before bagging an assist at the end.

Newcastle want to sign Mbeumo in January but they would need to sell before they can buy.

Mbeumo would cost Newcastle £50m in January but there is plenty of baggage that Howe can shift to help him get the player he wants.

Several players have been linked with moves away from the club in January. Kieran Trippier could leave Newcastle as he searches for consistent first team football.

Paraguayan winger Miguel Almiron has attracted interest from abroad and has been told he is free to leave Newcastle in January.
