Newcastle United have opened talks with Miguel Almiron's representatives about a possible January exit.
The Paraguay international is attracting a lot of interest but - as reported in the United States today - Charlotte FC of the MLS are believed to be in "pole position" to sign the 30-year-old. A fee that will eventually add up to $20million could prove to be the tipping point for the forward's signature.
Eddie Howe stated last night that he wouldn't want to lose many players in early 2025 but if a deal can open up the door to incoming business, the club may reluctantly have to sell some fringe players. And Almiron fits into that category despite staying loyal to the club in recent windows.
Charlotte FC are believed to have acquired what the MLS rule book calls the player's "discovery rights" meaning that they are the only club that can negotiate for [Almiron](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/miguel-almiron-contract-truth-revealed-30386844) from the States. However, Chronicle Live understands that their MLS rivals Toronto FC are watching developments carefully and waiting in the wings if Charlotte decide against the deal.
We have also learned that Almiron has interest from Brazilian clubs plus Argentinean giants River Plate. Earlier today Wolves, Crystal Palace and Leicester City were credited with interest in the star who has two years left on his deal at St James' Park.
His agent Daniel Campos said: "Although Miguel is not happy with the minutes he has in England, he wants to stay and fight for his place at Newcastle. The coach (Eddie Howe) always supported him. When he made a request, he asked him not to leave. It must be a tactical or temporary issue."
"They offered around 18 million dollars . We had arranged a contract with them, but the club rejected the proposal from the United States."
Almiron has never hidden his admiration for River Plate and has even indicated that the Argentinian side would represent a dream move for him. Almiron said: "When I was a kid I watched all the games, I was a big fan because my father's family is Argentine. Whenever I can and when time allows, I watch the games with my family. I always wanted to play for River, it's one of my greatest dreams."
Almiron's wage bill in the Premier League is believed to be £60,000 per week. He was a £21million buy from Atlanta United back in 2019 under [Rafa Benitez](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/all-about/rafa-benitez).
