EFL Cup semi-final draw confirmed as Arne Slot's Liverpool to face fellow heavyweights

Liverpool have been drawn against Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, while Arsenal will take on Newcastle United for a spot at Wembley.

The quarter-finals concluded with a blockbuster battle between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United on Thursday evening, where Ange Postecoglou's team prevailed 4-3 in a back-and-forth affair.

Prior to Spurs' success in North London, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle had all sealed their final four places on Wednesday evening, with the Gunners conquering Crystal Palace 3-2 in another absorbing London derby.

Meanwhile, Newcastle made light work of Brentford in a 3-1 home success, while Liverpool - the defending champions - edged out managerless Southampton 2-1 to keep their hopes of back-to-back titles alive.

The holders have been rewarded with another daunting test against Postecoglou's Tottenham, whom they will also take on in Sunday's Premier League battle ahead of their two-legged tie next year.

Liverpool and Tottenham's semi-final will mark their first meeting outside of the Premier League since the 2019 Champions League final, and not since October 2016 have they done battle in the League Cup, a 2-1 win for the Reds in the last 16.

As Spurs and Liverpool prepare for battle, Arsenal have been handed arguably the friendliest fixture of the lot, as the Gunners will face an inconsistent Newcastle side for a place in the final.

Arsenal have won the only three EFL Cup matches between themselves and the Magpies in the past, but Mikel Arteta's men have already been slain 1-0 by Eddie Howe's team in the 2024-25 campaign.

When are the EFL Cup semi-finals?

The 2024-25 EFL Cup semi-finals will begin with the first legs on the week commencing January 6, before the return fixture takes place on the week beginning February 3.

Tottenham will be at home for the first leg of their semi against Liverpool, while Arsenal will also host Newcastle first up before travelling to St James' Park a few weeks later.

The final of the 2024-25 EFL Cup will take place at Wembley on March 16, where Liverpool could win the tournament for a record-extending 11th time if they get past Spurs in the semi-final first up.
