Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana was seen supporting Altay Bayindir following a controversial performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup.

The Turkish shot-stopper was under the spotlight after just a quarter of an hour when he parried a strike from Pedro Porro straight into the path of Dominic Solanke for the opener. The tie looked out of sight less than ten minutes into the second half when Dejan Kulusevski and Solanke made it 3-0.

However, drama was to come when home goalkeeper Fraser Forster gifted Joshua Zirkzee and Amad goals to make the game interesting. With just moments of normal time remaining, Spurs would put United to bed as Son Heung-min miraculously scored direct from a corner.

In the immediate aftermath, Bayindir remonstrated with the referee John Brooks after he felt he was fouled by Lucas Bergvall. The goalkeeper was booked for his complaints but continued them after the replay was shown on the big screen.

VAR was not in operation tonight so the goal could not be checked. It would prove to be a sickening moment for Bayindir as Jonny Evans scored in stoppage time to set up a tense last few moments but it was too little, too late.

After the final whistle, Bayindir was not finished arguing his case with the referee and he was joined by Onana in the middle of the pitch. Of course, these protestations were futile but it at least showed the goalkeeper's union remains alive and well at Old Trafford.

Onana is expected to return to the starting XI on Sunday when United host AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League.
