'Brilliant': Jason Cundy hails 'quick' Chelsea player for his display in the 5-1 win over Shamrock Rovers

Chelsea’s superb form at the back end of 2024 continued yesterday with a convincing victory over Shamrock Rovers.

Chelsea produced another clinical display on Thursday night, winning 5-1 at home against Shamrock Rovers in the Conference League.

The Blues have topped the group phase of the Conference League by winning six out of six matches. Incidentally, their next match in the European tournament will be in March when the Round of 16 stage kicks off.

Enzo Maresca’s side are now on a fantastic eight-game winning streak across all competitions. The last time they failed to win a game was back on 10 November in the 1-1 Premier League draw at home to Arsenal.

Jason Cundy impressed by Chelsea striker Marc Guiu

Jason Cundy was full of praise for Chelsea’s Marc Guiu after his individual contribution versus Shamrock Rovers.

The 18-year-old Blues striker delivered an outstanding performance in midweek by scoring his first hat-trick for the club.

“I saw Guiu in pre-season, and we were all very excited about what we saw. He’s quick. He closes down. He chases lost causes. He even chases balls you shouldn’t win. This is an example. He anticipates the ball going back to the goalkeepers. That’s not by accident. He’s earned that goal,” Cundy said via Chelsea’s official app (8:35pm, 19 December).

When discussing Guiu’s second goal, Cundy added: “It’s a brilliant piece of striker instinct to get himself there. Then he’s still got a bit of work to do. He’s got to compose himself. He’s nipped in front of the goalkeeper. The angle is tight and narrow. Make sure you get a good first touch and slide into the empty net…Brilliant piece of anticipating goalscoring nouse. Well done him.”

Guiu is now actually the top scorer in this year’s Conference League tournament after his latest goals.

Marc Guiu a bargain signing

Chelsea only paid £5m (BBC) in the summer to sign Guiu from Barcelona, which is looking more and more like a great bit of transfer business.

It’s now six goals in 10 Blues appearances across all competitions this season, so he’s taking his chance in the cup when they come along. However, his one and only Premier League appearance was the opening day defeat to Manchester City back in August.

Joe Cole would like Chelsea striker Guiu to feature in the Premier League after his heroics this week in Europe.

If defences see Guiu coming off the bench for late cameos in games, they’re quickly going to find out he’s a nuisance to play against with his pace, pressing and energy.
